Montclair, NJ — WHEELEROIDZ drops May 20, 2025, from Abandoned Books. As if taking good Polaroids isn’t challenging enough, Wheeler Antabanez—writer, photographer, and Weird NJ raconteur—decided to explore Montclair’s pitch-black underground armed only with a Polaroid Now camera.

“Polaroid film loves light, so shooting underground in the Gates of Heck wasn’t exactly easy,” says Wheeler. “I had two powerful flashlights with me, but even still, most of the photos turned out completely black. The few Polaroids from the tunnels that did manage to develop are the ones that made it into the book.”

The “Gates of Heck” is local slang for a maze of pipes and culverts carrying stormwater and the subterranean Toney’s Brook beneath Montclair, NJ. This hazardous, no-trespassing zone—prone to flash floods, sewage, and ceiling collapses—makes the perfect setting for the opening chapter of WHEELEROIDZ.
